Masion Mercury Jones co-founder Aurelia Havet wins prestigious National Diversity Lifetime Award

Representation is important. When people see themselves reflected in music, theatre, films, books, and stories, it can help combat feelings of isolation while challenging traditional narratives. Importantly, representation means ending the silencing of voices that has been occurring for centuries.

True representation needs a champion - a person who passionately and authentically lives and breathes representation and the changes it brings. Someone who can correct historical imbalances and share fresh stories, viewpoints and creative approaches.

Celebrating the legacy of custom music company MMJ co-founder Aurelia Havet

When creating music for brands, true representation needs more than just good intentions – it needs visionary leadership. Aurelia Havet embodied that leadership at Maison Mercury Jones, where she revolutionised how music for advertising could amplify diverse voices and break down barriers.

As Head of Strategy at brand music agency Maison Mercury Jones, Aurelia ensured diversity underpinned every aspect of the agency.  Aurelia pioneered the first music branding agency dedicated to inclusive representation. As co-founder and co-director, she championed diversity across all gender identities, underrepresented ethnicities, ages, and dis/abilities in music and marketing for brands.

Aurelia knew that the industry needed a custom music company that would give a voice to marginalised or silenced artists. Alongside co-founder Ila, she ensured that artists were nurtured and free to be creative in a safe, inclusive space at Maison Mercury Jones.

Shortly after launching Maison Mercury Jones in 2022, Aurelia was diagnosed with inflammatory bilateral breast cancer and lymphoma. Despite these severe health challenges, her determination never wavered as she continued working with remarkable resilience.

Her relentless pursuit of championing underrepresented artists and advancing Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in music and marketing serve as a testament to her commitment to her life's mission.

In a devasting loss, Aurelia passed away peacefully and without pain surrounded by her loved ones on April 26, 2004.

In their tribute, Ila wrote: “She led with heart, humour, and radical openness. Just a week before her death she joked: ‘Don’t let anyone say that I’ve lost my fight against cancer. If anything, it’s a draw because when I die, the cancer dies with me’.

“Aurelia was a trailblazer who lived by our core values of true diversity, creativity, and innovation in every aspect of her life.

“Aurelia’s spirit lives on in all of us at MMJ as we continue to grow and honour her incredible legacy through music and sound.”

Aurelia’s passion for inclusiveness saw her posthumously recognised with a Lifetime Achiever Award at the National Diversity Awards, the UK’s most prestigious diversity event.

In writing the nomination entry, Ila highlighted the many ways in which Aurelia made significant, innovative and cumulatively outstanding contributions to enhancing equality and diversity.

“In recognition of Aurelia's exceptional achievements, dedication and enduring legacy, we wholeheartedly nominate her for the Lifetime Achiever Award.

“Her strength and passion amidst personal adversity epitomise the essence of a true lifetime achiever, leaving an indelible mark on her industry and the world at large.

“Although Aurelia is sadly no longer with us after passing away in April 2024, her legacy as a visionary trailblazer will continue to resonate and inspire generations to come.”

National Diversity Awards presenter Clare Balding shared Aurelia’s accomplishments during the ceremony, speaking of her resilience and commitment.

“Today, we honour the legacy of an extraordinary individual whose impact continues to resonate even after their passing. Their remarkable contributions have left an indelible mark on our lives, and it is with deep respect and admiration that we present in posthumous recognition to Aurelia Havet. Please join us in paying tribute to a life well-lived.”

In accepting the award on her behalf, Ila summed up the spirit of Aurelia.

“Aurelia was a true force of nature, a trailblazer who lived by our core values of true diversity, creativity and innovation in every single aspect of her life. Her work wasn’t just her profession; it was her life’s calling.

“She not only built a successful business but a thriving community. Throughout her career and even in her very last days, Aurelia worked tirelessly to create safe spaces for marginalised communities, spearheaded initiatives that championed LGBTQ+ rights and mentored countless individuals who continue to carry her torch today.

“Aurelia, you have left an indelible mark on the world, and I know that your spirit is here with us today.”

Aurelia’s innovative approach and dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion ensure that the changes she ushered in will be long remembered and respected.
